R French "Fleur de Lys" violin £875
Circa 1880, Paris, length 360mm.
This fully restored instrument has the classic double-purfled edges and decorative inlaid Fleur de Lys pattern on the back.
From one of the 19th century Mirecourt or Paris schools, some of which showcased the elaborate craftsmanship of the time, to satisfy the export markets as the symbol was strongly associated with the French Monarchy.
This violin has been totally restored, unfortunately so too has the finish as the original on the instrument when it came to me was beyond recovery, but is now finished in a red/brown spirit varnish, strung with Pirastro Piranito strings over a Despiau bridge, and has rosewood pegs and chinrest with a fluted ebony tailpiece.
Lovely rich tone, and perfect for those looking for an inexpensive but iconic instrument
