A chance browse in Glyn’s violin display at the New Forest Folk Festival 2021 revealed to me some interesting design and modern ideas as well as some beautiful instruments. Glyn was more than happy to share his knowledge and skills of violin-making, to talk about the instruments on display and to allow me to take some instruments away to play in my own time. They were a delight to play, comfortable, responsive and with beautiful tone.
I commissioned Glyn to make me a Vio-5 Electro-Acoustic model with the Celtic Knot decoration, in honey tone with black contrasts. His attention to my wishes was meticulously demonstrated, from choosing the wood through to his photographic documentation of each stage of the construction, adjusting the body shape to fit my style of playing, his encouragement for me to visit to see my violin in the making, his demonstration and explanation of techniques used and finally his choice of case and detail for the finished violin…….my Maisie, because she is so a-mais-ing! She is beautiful to look at, beautiful to play, comfortable to hold, and with a rich and mellow tone which is developing all the time the more I play her. She is equally responsive acoustically or when amplified. A few minor electronic issues which arose post-completion when she was amplified were quickly resolved by Glyn. He is clearly a master in his knowledge and in his skills of violin-making and a craftsman who accepts no less than perfection in what he does.
His repairs and maintenance of instruments is also of a very high standard. I have had adjustments and peg replacements completed on another violin and a bow re-haired by him.
